South West

From Gina Sherman, Programme Coordinator for Apples & Snakes South West

Hi, I am Gina the new Apples & Snakes South West programme Coordinator and I’m hugely thrilled to have taken up the post and eager to throw myself in at the deep end! Before this role I was working at The Barbican Theatre, Plymouth as programme coordinator for the Volunteers programme. I now work part time for a Dance Agency based in Exeter, so I have a bit of knowledge when it comes to arts in the South West.   I am also a practising performer with a passion for all forms of performance art, especially those of a textual kind as my degree in Performance writing demonstrates.
As you know, the SW is one of the biggest Regions  and over the past few years many exciting projects and events have found their home here. Regular events such as Forked in Plymouth and the Gallery Sessions in Barnstaple have become regular highlights for the venues audiences and artists alike.

With this delicious selection of events already in place,  Apples & Snakes in the South West is now working to enhance and extend the work and involvement it has with performance poets. I am looking to start a professional development programme, which will work to develop poet’s skills both in a performance frame work and on an educational basis. My plan is to build on the already fruitful infrastructure and use this to give the poets I work with a helping hand. The aim is to provide support which ensures that the emerging talent of today is leading the way for all performance poets in the future

The south west has a hugely diverse and exciting voice that Apples and Snakes has been lucky enough to work with; it is now my  intention to give these voices the opportunity to grow, to educate and be educated and to fulfil their true potential.
This year is  the launch of Exeter Poetry Festival, which is sure to delight and provoke all that seek it out. Bristol Poetry Festival will be returning along with one of our biggest highlights, Port Elliot Festival, taking place in July.

On top of all this, Apples and Snakes South West is keen to further develop its national relationship with Apples and Snakes regions around England. We are looking to find new ways to connect and work with each other from all corners of the Apples & Snakes realm.

Why not drop me a line at gina@applesandsnakes.org.  I would love to hear from any poets or poet enthusiast out there who perform and attend events in the South West.
