Scratch Tyne runs every third Saturday of the month in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and is our longest-running regular artist development session in the north-east. It’s open to everyone, from beginners looking for a confidence boosts before their first open mic night to experienced performers asking for honest feedback as they experiment with new work. The format is simple – warm-up together, explore a new performance technique together, then share work and give helpful feedback.

It was originally facilitated by producer Kirsten Luckins, and is now co-hosted by Sky Hawkins and Rowan McCabe, experienced performers and educators who have been Scratch Tyne regulars since it began in 2010. Occasionally the group invites guest facilitators with specific skills to lead a session, but always with a primary focus on performance rather than writing.

We are developing a free guide for other groups who would like to set up their own Scratch Club, with tips and exercises to try. Kirsten is available to help new Scratches set up, and will be co-facilitating four ‘Say Owt Scratches’ in York from 2017-18 to support the establishment of a regular rehearsal community there.
