Jasmine’s Story

If it wasn’t for Apples and Snakes I would be nowhere near the poet and facilitator that I am today.

Apples and Snakes 100% changed my life and I’m very grateful for its existence, for an organisation that cares for you and really has poets’ backs.
Jasmine Gardosi’s first experience of spoken word was through Apples and Snakes – a Lit Fuse gig in 2011. The following year, she performed on the open mic at Hit the Ode, Apples and Snakes’ flagship Birmingham event, to which she returned in 2013 to see poet Hannah Silva perform. This performance influenced her sense of what she could do as a poet, and her writing really took off. By 2014 she was facilitating Poets’ Place, our space for Midlands-based poets to meet and support one another, something she still runs today. In 2014 Apples and Snakes gave Jasmine her first feature performance at Level Up, and the following year she returned to Hit the Ode for another feature performance, which saw the bookings come flooding in, including one from TedX Birmingham. Apples and Snakes’ Midlands Producer at the time, Bohdan Piasecki, saw Jasmine’s potential as a facilitator and arranged for her to shadow poet Spoz to gain experience of running workshops.
Jasmine now regularly runs her own school workshops. Mentored by Hannah Silva, Jasmine was part of our Public Address: The Soapbox Tour in 2015, gaining incredible experience of touring nationally. This led to Jasmine securing gigs at a number of Apples and Snakes events across the country, including 451, Jawdance, Queer’Say, Spokes Amaze, and Tees Women Poets. Jasmine attended our 2017 Arvon retreat tutored by Roger Robinson and Caroline Bird, an experience she thanks for her being shortlisted three times for Birmingham Poet Laureate. Jasmine has also been an Edinburgh Fringe Slam finalist, has featured in Hurtz pamphlet 2019, been a Young Creative for BBC Arts, and has been featured on BBC Radio 3, and America’s Button Poetry. Jasmine is part of Apples and Snakes’ inaugural Poetic Theatre Makers development programme in partnership with Birmingham Rep.
