Hit the Ode: HYP Showcase

Hit the Ode brings remarkable spoken word artists to the heart of Birmingham.

October’s edition is the Hippodrome Young Poets (HYP) Showcase, celebrating the work of some of Birmingham’s finest spoken word artists and the launch of their first anthology, created with Verve Poetry Press.

Performing alongside HYP will be renowned poet Jacob Sam-La Rose and award-winning performer Jasmine Gardosi, who have mentored them in the practice and possibilities of poetry. Add an open mic, set from DJ Psykhomantus, and an international poet and you have a compelling spectrum of spoken word. Be there.

Launched in January 2019, Hippodrome Young Poets (HYP) is a significant artistic development programme for young poets in the Midlands run by Birmingham Hippodrome and Apples and Snakes. The first cohort includes:

Lerah Mae Barcenilla / Jack Crowe / Danai Denga / Adrian Earle / Nafeesa Hamid / Shaun Hill / Kibriya Mehrban / Amara Ranger / George Reiner / Ellie Rushton / Bethany Slinn / Hannah Swingler / Jessica Syposz / Emma Thompson / Afrah Yafai

Jacob Sam-La Rose is widely recognised as an indefatigable facilitator, mentor and supporter of young and emerging poets.
