Words Weekend

All events are postponed until further notice. Please read our statement for more information.

Expect a high energy event celebrating spoken word in all its forms; poetry, comedy, slam battle, and rap.

Four local poets and rappers will compete in a showcase mini-slam, followed by headline sets from Jasmine Gardosi, Birdspeed and Daniel Piper.

Daniel Piper is an author, comedian and national poetry slam champion. He has been on TV, radio and toured across the UK and Europe with his work. His debut book, Arbitrary and Unnecessary, was published in 2018.

Jasmine Gardosi is the current Axis Slam Champion and former Cheltenham Poetry Festival, Mix It Up Midlands and International Pangaea Poetry Slam winner. Having appeared on BBC Radio 3’s The Verb, BBC Asian Network and at Glastonbury Festival, Jasmine is a recent BBC Slam Finalist who was also shortlisted for Birmingham Poet Laureate 2018/20.

Fresh from her Edinburgh Fringe Slam Championship win, British born Barbadian raised artist, Birdspeed, is known for her ability to captivate audiences by effortlessly weaving poetry, storytelling, satirical humour and movement. Her writing is equally as breath-taking and often a combination of social commentary and auto- biographical.

Hosted by Apples and Snakes producer Kirsten Luckins and Don Jenkins from the Born Lippy collective.
