Shagufta explores the personal and political through themes of gender inequality, racism and the injustice in our world. Her poems are thought provoking, rich and vivid in their imagery. Shagufta will read from her work, followed by a Q&A and book signing.
Jam is for Girls, Girls Get Jam (Burning Eye Books) is fiercely honest, giving witness to the immigrant experience and giving voice to the women who made journeys into unknown lands through the eyes of their daughters. This is not a collection that struggles between two conflicting cultures, but is an unashamed and unapologetic confirmation of the third generation identity carving itself a space in an increasingly Islamaphobic world.

Shagufta K Iqbal is a poet who uses the arts to reach out and engage with audiences who feel their experiences are not reflected within traditional and mainstream arts. Described by Gal Dem as a poet whose work ‘leaves you validated but aching – her narratives are important, heart-wrenching and relatable.’. She is the founder of The YoniVerse Collective, and currently writing her debut novel. She has been performing and leading workshops for several years and has an interest in gender studies and representations of South Asian women in literature.
