Camden Young Writers

Are you an aspiring writer aged 16-18 living or studying in Camden?

Camden Young Writers is The Poetry Society’s latest opportunity for local young writers in the London borough of Camden. This free programme will introduce you to the skills you’ll need in any creative career.

Over weekly sessions throughout the autumn term, award-winning poets will guide you through the essentials – critical reading, writing and editing skills, along with how to give and receive feedback, share your work via performance and magazines, and create your own writing community.

Camden Young Writers will also offer you experience in skills vital to any creative career. You’ll learn how writers earn a living from running writing workshops and organising events. You’ll get to support a professional poet delivering a workshop in a local school, and at the end of the programme, as a collective, you’ll organise your own public events at The Poetry Café in Covent Garden, so that friends and family can hear writing from the group.

Just as importantly, you’ll get to meet other young writers in Camden in a friendly, welcoming space, and get exclusive insights into the writing life from the UK’s leading poetry organisation. Plus – there will be snacks!

The sessions will be led by poets and focus on poetry-related skills, but the programme is open to all kinds of writers and will equip you with skills that you can use no matter what kind of creative career you go into. You don’t need any prior experience to take part – just an interest in learning more about developing a career as a writer.

Where? The Poetry Café, 22 Betterton Street, WC2H 9BX. Nearest tube stations: Covent Garden, Holborn, Tottenham Court Road.

When? 4.30-6.30pm on Mondays 7, 14, 21 October, 4, 11, 18, 25 November, 2, 9 and Wednesday 11 December 2024.

Cost: Free! We’ll provide snacks and can also offer bursaries to cover your travel costs.

Access: The space is fully wheelchair accessible. The sessions will include a 15 minute break, and you’re welcome to take more breaks. If you have any access requirements, let us know when you apply.
